PROBLEM

Digital tools promise connection but often create distance. This study explored why.

OVERVIEW

I conducted research and interviews examining how Gen Z and their grandparents struggle to stay connected through technology, despite having more communication tools than ever.

CONTEXT

When was the last time you talked to your grandparent?

What does it mean...

When did 'staying in touch' start feeling like work? This study explored why Gen Z and their grandparents struggle to connect through technology despite having more tools than ever.

QUESTION

How can technology designed to connect us end up dividing generations instead?

The topic was initially too broad, so I narrowed it to one dynamic: Gen Z and their grandparents—two generations separated by the widest digital literacy gap.

01
Netnography
I analyzed conversations on Reddit, Facebook, and Quora to identify patterns in how people discussed intergenerational communication struggles. This helped me understand what questions to ask and where the pain points lived.
02
In-Depth Interviews

KEY FINDING

The digital divide isn’t linear, it’s Interconnected

Through interviews, I discovered that communication barriers don't exist in isolation. They form an interdependent system where each challenge reinforces the others.

This is how it feels.

Every time they update the app, I feel like I have to start over..

Video calls aren't the same as having someone next to you😢

We see things differently now because we no longer do things together.

The reality is that connection is becoming a chore.

Technology Adoption

4 of 6 ended chats when tech help wasn’t available.

Social Isolation

3 felt isolated as video calls replaced visits.

Shared Experiences

5 said screens replaced shared activities.

MEANING

The pattern that emerged

These factors reveal that the digital divide is less about access and more about sustaining meaningful connection through technology.

Different media consumption

Fewer common experiences

💔 Growing disconnect

Fewer physical visits

Less shared context

🚧 Harder conversations

Technology barriers

Shorter, more frustrating calls

🫥 Less motivation to connectdoption

OPPORTUNITIES

Design for more…is better

As a designer, I see an opportunity to create tools that help people overcome tech barriers and truly stay connected.

This project reminded me that aging is inevitable and technology will shape how we stay connected. The challenge isn’t adding features, it’s designing tools that keep relationships real. I hope this work helps ensure no one gets left behind.
